Grand Prix of Croatia: Two Days of Racing Above the Adriatic

When Formula 3 cars, GT machinery, touring cars and several one-make series all take to the same circuit over a single weekend, there is no shortage of moments worth capturing.

The real challenge is bringing all of those moments together into one coherent story.

The Grand Prix of Croatia took place on 16 and 17 May 2026 at the Grobnik circuit. The inaugural edition combined two days of racing with live music and additional motorsport experiences at one of Croatia’s best-known racetracks.

AK Dubrovnik Racing commissioned us to handle the complete production of the official aftermovie — from the initial creative concept and filming preparation to the final edit, sound design and motion graphics.

THE FIRST EDITION OF A NEW RACING WEEKEND

The Grand Prix of Croatia brought together several racing series and more than 130 drivers on the 4.168-kilometre Grobnik circuit.

Each category delivered a different type of action. Formula cars, GT machinery and touring cars do not look, sound or move in the same way. Alongside the on-track programme, the event also featured live music, a fan zone and additional activities for visitors beyond the racing itself.

From a production perspective, this meant the aftermovie could not simply be a sequence of the fastest passes and best shots of the cars.

It needed to capture the variety of the entire weekend while maintaining a clear rhythm and ensuring that every element felt like part of the same event.

THREE DAYS OF PRODUCTION AT AN ACTIVE RACETRACK

Although the main programme lasted two days, production on location covered a total of three days.

A five-person crew worked across the circuit, paddock and other event areas. As the Grobnik circuit is more than four kilometres long, it is impossible to cover the entire programme effectively from only a few fixed positions.

Before filming began, we needed to determine which sections of the track would be used to capture each category, when the crew would need to relocate and which moments could not be missed.

In addition to the racing, we followed the preparation of the cars, the drivers, the audience, the music programme and the atmosphere inside the fan zone.

These moments between races are what allow the finished film to show more than the sporting results. They communicate the full experience of the event.

WEATHER THAT KEPT CHANGING THE PLAN

One of the greatest production challenges was the unfavourable forecast and the constantly changing conditions at Grobnik.

When filming at an outdoor circuit, a change in weather affects more than the appearance of the shot. It can alter the racing schedule, the behaviour of the cars, the movement of the production crew and the decisions about where it is safe to film at any given moment.

The filming plan therefore had to be adjusted throughout the weekend.

Positions and priorities changed alongside the schedule and track conditions, while the crew still needed to capture enough varied material for the final film.

In the end, the changing weather became part of the aftermovie’s visual identity. Variations in light, track conditions and atmosphere helped communicate how dramatically the character of a race weekend can shift within only a few hours.

HOW DO YOU CONNECT MULTIPLE RACING CATEGORIES INTO ONE STORY?

For an event like this, much of the work begins only after the final car has left the circuit.

A large volume of footage from different categories must be shaped into a film with a clear beginning, progression and conclusion. Every racing series needs enough space to be recognised, but the result cannot feel like a compilation of six separate events.

The edit was therefore structured around the rhythm of the entire weekend.

Slower sequences showing preparation and atmosphere were combined with more intense racing sections, while the sound design connected the different engine notes, crowd reactions and ambient sounds of the circuit.

Drone footage was used to communicate the scale of the venue and its position in the hills above the Adriatic, while trackside cameras captured the speed and immediacy of the racing.

Motion graphics and colour grading brought the different weather conditions and areas of the programme together into one consistent visual world.

THE AFTERMOVIE OF THE FIRST CHAPTER

As this was the inaugural Grand Prix of Croatia, the official aftermovie serves a greater purpose than simply summarising the weekend.

It is the first complete film documenting the event and a starting point for how the Grand Prix of Croatia will be presented to audiences, drivers, championships and partners in the future.

The film captures what made the first edition distinctive: a wide variety of racing cars, continuous action on the circuit, live music, the audience and the unique setting of the Grobnik circuit.
